PHZ-Sicks talks with DMV Writers about his Black Women

Song: Black Women
Album/Project: The Moment
Producer: Best Kept Secret

What motivated you to write this song?

Sicks: I know a lot of extraordinary women of color in my life. They are intelligent, driven women that has the beauty to match. A few of them like to head out with their girls to the club and most of the music they hear is derogatory towards them. The music doesn’t reflect or respect the women that they are. Once hearing the beat, I just wanted to give them something they could bump in the club and feel the message behind it.

What message were you trying to convey?

Sicks: I wanted to convey the beauty of the history for Black women, highlight their strength and accomplishments, and that some of the physical attributes that others like some men hold so high don’t mean as much as the impact you can leave in this world by your actions.

Are there any stories that you would like to share in relevance to the song?

Sicks: The first rhyme you hear once the song plays which is “How the hell can you not love black women?” came while watching a certain segment during the BET Awards. I had written it on twitter and got a crazy amount of tweets. It was like I hit a button. I stored that thought in my head and it came out right when I needed it.

[Hook: PHZ-Sicks]
How the hell can you not love black women?
I’m talking black women
The Queens of Mother Earth
How the hell can you not love black women?
I’m talking black women
I’m talking black women
Sun rays baked in their skin cause the Earth revolves around them
I’m talking Black Women
(repeat)

[Verse 1: PHZ-Sicks]
Black women, those independent, I'm going to get it
My ancestors didn't suffer, 400 years for me not to go and win it
From HBCs to Ivy Leagues, knowing most people are out of your league
The backbone of the family, working even when fatigue
There’s a war going on outside and their black skin is their fatigues
Royalty is defined by them, go ahead, and speak on it, Queen
Just cause you dressed that way, doesn't make you a slut
You'll be fine without us and we damn right can't even judge
The life that you live when you gave all that you can give
IF we had half that strength, their probably wouldn't be so many weak men
Talking about what you need to be doing
Fuck 'em
Do what you want, change the world in the way you to see it
Remember you’re a Queen, so if there is any goal you want, you can easily achieve it
Uh, Do your thing, Queen, Do it
Do your thing, Queen, do your thing
Make sure what you leave behind is something
That will forever have your name ring-
-Ing in to an eternity
From Makeda to the slave ships
To right now to the cosmic
Go on, Queen, don’t stop, get it, get it, and do that shit

[Hook]

[Verse 2: PHZ-Sicks]
My Momma, my Grandma
My Aunt are beautiful black women
My cousins, my best friends
Are all beautiful black women
My Angela Davis. black women
My Nikki Giovanni, black women
My Michelle Obama, black women
My Maya Angelou, black women
My Assata Shakur, black women
My Josephine Baker, black women
My Ruby Dee, black women
My Oprah Winfrey, black women
My bell hooks black women
My Rosa Parks, black women
My Myra Hemmings, black women
My Sojourner Truth, black women
My Harriet Tubman, black women
My Sade, black women
My Dorothy Dandridge, black women
My God, don't you know I love black women?
Huh, uh, can't you tell I love black women?
Huh, my God, can't you see I love black women?

[Bridge: PHZ-Sicks]
Whether your hair's natural or relax
Dreaded up or hair down ya back
Nobody's gonna hold you back
Tell them mind ya business & get back
(repeat)

Do your thing, Queen, do it
Do your thing, Queen, do it
(Don't stop, get it, get it
Don't stop, get it, get it)
Do your thing, Queen, do it
Do your thing, Queen, do it
(Don't stop, get it, get it
Don't stop, get it) Uh

Ihsan Bilal talks about the process of writing and creating the song "Alife" from her album Big Red Box

Song: Alife

Album/Project: Big Red Box
Producer: Ab the Pro

What motivated you to write this song?
Ihsan: Its easier for me to write break-up songs so I just picked up my pen and the melodies just came out. Alife was the name of the beat (my brother AB the Pro produced it) and I thought it was dope fresh so I wrote it in a cool way. I wrote, engineered, mixed, and mastered the song

What message were you trying to convey?
Ihsan:  We all want to be treated right and no one deserves less than that. Im always inspired by others situations. Im a creative person so I can make these stories up in my head and mix it with real life.

Are there any stories that you would like to share in relevance to the song?

Ihsan: I wrote this song for another artist who was signed at the time. She didn't want it. So I kept it for myself:). I ended up doing a music video for it in my apartment after a photo shoot. It was not planned. My sis Karimah came over and thats who you see in the beginning of the video with me. My videographer/best friend Thomas Mobley edited the video over night that same night and released it to the public (no stress). I had to be to work the in the morning, came home and we had over 1,000 views. Its a fun song and video.

Alife by Ihsan Bilal

No check it out this time
No hear me out this time
No really, check it out

Verse 1

Hop in the car
I’m flying tryna clear my head
I don’t know where you are
Passing time and
In my mind
Thinking that you are gone
I remember when you told me
I was your only one
But you’ll be so sorry when
I walk out the door

Hook

I think I wanna leave
Give me back my keys (walk out the door)
You cant handle me
So I gotta leave (walk out the door)
You wasted all my time
Your love was never mine (I’m a walk out the door)
Now I gotta go
Can you handle me
Walk out the door
door door door

Verse 2

Dont let it hit you when you leave
Along with those memories
Out of my face
No I’m not gonna stay
Why just rewind the tape
No your words dont mean a damn thing
So who you playing
No not me
Dont try to get me back now
See I told you so
You're gonna miss me
Cause I’m gone now
Watch me walk out the door

Hook

I think I wanna leave
Give me back my keys (walk out the door)
You cant handle me
So I gotta leave (I’m a walk out the door)
You wasted all my time
Your love was never mine (I’m a walk out the door)
Now I gotta go
Can you handle me
Walk out the door
door door door
Dont let it hit you when you leave
Along with those memories
